Why Photos Get Rejected

🎨

Wrong background

Background isn't white or correct color

📐

Incorrect dimensions

Photo isn't the required size

👤

Face too big/small

Head doesn't meet size ratio

IDPicly: AI adjusts crop for correct head size

💡

Shadows on face

Uneven lighting causing shadows

IDPicly: Lighting correction and enhancement

👁️

Eyes not centered

Eyes aren't in correct position

IDPicly: Face detection ensures correct alignment

👓

Wearing glasses

Glasses not allowed (most countries)

IDPicly: Retake without glasses

↪️

Head tilted

Face not straight to camera

IDPicly: Retake looking directly at camera

📅

Photo too old

Photo older than 6 months

IDPicly: Take a new photo

Not every country allows a fix. The US, Canada and Mexico do not accept photos changed in software, so for those we check and size your photo but tell you to retake anything that would need editing. Why editing gets photos rejected.

What happens if your passport photo is rejected — and do you pay again?

You do not pay the application fee again. A passport photo that is not accepted does not cancel your application — it pauses it. You send one replacement photo and processing continues. What a rejection actually costs you is time.

This is what the State Department says happens, on its own Respond to a Letter or Email page.

1You get a letter or email

One of the listed reasons they contact applicants is simply “we cannot accept your photo”. Your application status changes to Additional Information Needed.

2You have 90 days to reply

“You must respond to the letter or email within 90 days so we continue processing your application.” The due date is printed on the letter. Send the new photo to the full Sterling, Virginia address shown there — not to the passport agency’s street address, which is a common way to lose more weeks.

3Processing restarts

The status becomes Information Received, In Process Again. No second fee. But your application sat still from the day they posted the letter until the day your replacement arrived, and that is on top of normal processing time.

So the real question is not whether a rejection costs money. It is whether the photo you are about to send is going to be rejected too — which is the part you can check before you post it, for nothing.

Rejection FAQ

Why was my passport photo rejected?
Common reasons include: wrong background color, incorrect size, shadows on face, wearing glasses, head tilted, photo too old, or face not properly centered. Government systems use automated checks that are very strict.
If my passport photo gets rejected, do I have to pay again?
No. A photo the State Department cannot accept pauses your application rather than ending it, so there is no second application fee for sending a replacement. Their letter gives you 90 days to respond, and once the new photo arrives your status changes to "Information Received, In Process Again". What a rejection costs is weeks, not money — your application sits still from the day the letter goes out until your replacement reaches them.
What happens if a passport photo is rejected?
You get a letter or email saying they cannot accept your photo, and your application status changes to "Additional Information Needed". You send one compliant photo to the Sterling, Virginia address printed on the letter — not to the passport agency's street address — within 90 days. Processing then continues from where it stopped. Your application is not cancelled and you do not reapply.
Can I resubmit after rejection?
Yes. For a mailed US application you send a new photo to the address on the letter, within the 90-day deadline it gives you. For online portals such as Passport Seva or the IRCC PR portal you upload a replacement directly. In both cases the fix is one photo, not a new application.
How do I fix a rejected passport photo?
Use IDPicly to create a new, compliant photo. We size and centre the photo and check it against your country's official rules before you pay. For the US, Canada and Mexico, which do not accept software-edited photos, we tell you what to retake instead of editing it.
Will CVS/Walgreens give me a refund for rejected photos?
Policies vary by store. Most will retake photos if rejected, but may not refund the original fee. With IDPicly, you get a 100% refund if your photo is rejected for technical reasons.
How long does it take to fix a rejected photo?
About 2 minutes. Upload a new photo, we check and size it, download immediately. No waiting, no appointments, no returning to a store.
